Adam Drese

1620–1701 · Weimar, Thuringia · Germany

A court musician at Weimar, Drese trained in Warsaw and rose to Kapellmeister in 1655. Later duties took him to Jena as ducal secretary and town mayor, then to Arnstadt as Kapellmeister to the prince. Around 1680 the writings of Spener changed his religious life, and he began hosting Pietist prayer meetings in his home, writing both words and melodies for them.
