Anne Steele
1717–1778 · Broughton, Hampshire · England
The daughter of a Baptist preacher and timber merchant, she lived her whole life in Broughton, Hampshire, and turned down a proposal from the minister Benjamin Beddome so she could keep writing. Chronic illness and a string of family losses run through her verse. Her hymns appeared under the pen name Theodosia and filled the early Baptist hymnals on both sides of the Atlantic.
