Composer

Arthur Seymour Sullivan

18421900 · Lambeth, London · England

Born in Lambeth to an Irish bandmaster and an Italian mother, Sullivan sang in the Chapel Royal and became the first Mendelssohn scholar, which took him to Leipzig. His hymn tunes mostly date from 1867 to 1874, the years before his stage partnership with W. S. Gilbert took over his career. He refused to let his operetta melodies be turned into hymn tunes.
