Author
Augustus M. Toplady
1740–1778 · Farnham, Surrey · United Kingdom
Converted at sixteen at a barn meeting in Ireland under a lay preacher who could barely spell his own name, Toplady became a firm Calvinist and clashed with Wesley and the Methodists. He was vicar of Broadhembury in Devon from 1768 and spent his last years preaching in London. His 1776 collection Psalms and Hymns ran to 419 hymns, and he died of consumption in his late thirties.
