Basil Harwood

Raised in a Quaker family as the second youngest of twelve children, Harwood first heard organ and choral music at his sister's Anglican confirmation. After Oxford and study at Leipzig he was organist at Ely Cathedral and then at Christ Church, Oxford, where he co-founded the Oxford Bach Choir. He retired at fifty to the family estate in Gloucestershire and kept composing, naming several tunes after places nearby.
