Benjamin Beddome

Apprenticed to a surgeon in Bristol, Beddome turned to preaching and in 1740 became pastor of the Baptist church at Bourton-on-the-Water in Gloucestershire, where he stayed for the rest of his life. Each week he wrote a fresh hymn to be sung after his Sunday morning sermon. A collection of 830 of them appeared after his death, and they found a wide audience in America.
