The eldest of eight children of a United Brethren bishop, Hanby grew up in Westerville, Ohio, in a house that sheltered people escaping slavery on the Underground Railroad. He graduated from Otterbein and became a United Brethren minister, later editing for a Cincinnati music publisher. Tuberculosis took him at thirty-three. His songs include "Up on the Housetop" and "Who Is He in Yonder Stall."
