Author
Benjamin Schmolck
1672–1737 · Brauchitschdorf, near Liegnitz, Silesia · Poland
The son of a Lutheran pastor in Silesia, Schmolck preached a sermon so striking that his patron paid for three years of theology at Leipzig. From 1702 he served the Friedenskirche at Schweidnitz for the rest of his life, rising to chief pastor. A stroke in 1730 cost him the use of his right hand, and blindness followed, yet he left some 900 hymns.
