Bernard of Clairvaux
1091–1153 · Les Fontaines, near Dijon, Burgundy · France
Born into a knightly family near Dijon, Bernard entered the monastery at Citeaux in 1113 and two years later led twelve monks out to found the abbey of Clairvaux. He became one of the most powerful churchmen of his century, backing Pope Innocent II during a papal schism and preaching the Second Crusade. When that crusade collapsed, much of the blame landed on him.
