Author
Bonaventura
1221–1274 · Bagnorea, Tuscany · Italy
A Franciscan from Tuscany, he taught theology at the University of Paris and at thirty-five was chosen to lead his order through a period of division. He turned down the archbishopric of York and, by one account, the papacy itself. Made a cardinal against his own wishes, he died at Lyons in 1274 while attending a church council.
