Catherine Winkworth

Winkworth learned German while living with relatives in Dresden and became the leading English translator of German hymns, faithful to the originals yet graceful in English. Her two series of Lyra Germanica and The Chorale Book for England brought hundreds of chorales into English worship. She also campaigned for higher education for women.
