Principal of the college at Beauvais from 1712 and rector of the University of Paris from 1718, Coffin wrote Latin hymns for the Paris Breviary of 1736. He aimed at devotion rather than poetic display, building his lines from Scripture so congregations could sing them. English translations by John Chandler and others carried them into Protestant hymnals.
