Charles H. H. Parry

Born into a wealthy East India Company family, Parry worked briefly in insurance before committing to music. He taught composition at the Royal College of Music from 1883 and became its director in 1895, shaping students such as Vaughan Williams and Holst. A keen sailor, he died in the influenza pandemic of 1918.
