Author
Charles Wesley
1707–1788 · Epworth · England
The youngest of eighteen children in an Epworth rectory, he joined the early Oxford Methodists while tutoring at Christ Church and later sailed to Georgia with his brother John. After his spiritual awakening in 1738 he preached as an itinerant, then settled in London and Bristol, where he visited prisoners at Newgate. He wrote roughly 6,500 hymns, among them "Hark! the herald angels sing" and "Christ the Lord is risen today."
