Chester G. Allen

1838–1878

A music teacher in the Cleveland, Ohio, public schools, he also edited Sunday school songbooks that helped shape the gospel songs of his era. His tune for Fanny Crosby's "Praise Him! Praise Him!" first appeared in Bright Jewels in 1869, and his bright, march-like melodies are still sung.
