After studying at the Chicago Musical Institute she taught at a girls' seminary in Lyons, Iowa, where she met her husband. In 1882 she became the first woman to publish a book of anthems, The Royal Anthem Book, and later brought out three song collections with help from Horatio Palmer. A buggy accident near Dubuque killed her in 1897.
