A Church of England priest ordained in 1901, he spent most of his working life in schools, as headmaster first of Shrewsbury and then of Eton. From 1933 to 1951 he was dean of Durham, and he also served as chaplain to the king. Many of his hymns appeared in twentieth-century editions of Hymns Ancient and Modern.
