Born in a logging camp at Lincoln, Maine, he studied at Bangor Theological Seminary until ill health cut his training short. He was navigating the ship Gold Hunter when its crew mutinied near Cape Horn, and afterward ranched in California and worked in the Pennsylvania oil business. A committed Methodist, he gave his spare time to church and YMCA work.
