A Unitarian pastor in small Massachusetts towns, he stepped back from full-time ministry in 1847 because of poor health and turned to writing. He published several theological books and co-edited the Monthly Religious Magazine. "It came upon the midnight clear" ranks among the finest Christmas hymns in English, and though a Unitarian by affiliation he held firmly to the divinity of Christ.
