Edward Caswall

1814–1878 · Yately, Hampshire · England

An Oxford classics graduate, he served as an Anglican clergyman near Salisbury until 1847, then became a Roman Catholic in 1850 and joined Newman's Oratory at Edgbaston, where he cared for the poor and the sick. His main work was translating Latin hymns from the Roman Breviary, gathered in Lyra Catholica in 1849. Only J. M. Neale's translations appear more often in modern hymnals.
