Trained in medicine at Guy's Hospital, he was house surgeon at Swansea Infirmary for seventeen years before moving to London to write. He later edited the Royal Cornwall Gazette in Truro. For the Mitre Hymn Book of 1836 he supplied fifteen psalm versions and fifty hymns, among them "O God, unseen, yet ever near."
