The third daughter of the Sheriff of Fife, she grew up in Edinburgh and died near Melrose before turning forty. Her hymns were printed in the Family Treasury under the heading Breathings on the Border. Two of the eight are still widely sung: "Beneath the cross of Jesus" and "There were ninety and nine."
