A Toronto organist who made his public debut at ten, he was interned in Germany during the First World War and learned to conduct in the Ruhleben camp. Back home he ran the Toronto Conservatory and led the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for 25 years. King George V knighted him in 1935, the first Canadian musician so honored.
