Fanny Crosby

18201915 · Southeast, Putnam County, New York · United States

Blinded at six weeks old by a botched treatment during an illness, she entered the New York Institution for the Blind at fifteen and later taught there for eleven years. From 1864 she wrote Sunday school hymns for William Bradbury, and in time more than 4,000 for Biglow and Main, many under pen names. Her husband, Alexander Van Alstyne, was a blind musician, and she belonged to the Old John Street Methodist Church in New York.
