Composer
Felice Giardini
1716–1796 · Italy
An Italian violinist playing in theater orchestras by age twelve, he learned humility when the composer Jommelli slapped him for adding showy flourishes to an opera solo. He toured Europe as one of its finest players and directed the Italian Opera in London. A theater venture in Naples failed, and he met little success in Russia, where he died.
