Author & Composer

Frances Ridley Havergal

18361879 · Astley, Worcestershire · England

The daughter of a Worcestershire clergyman, she was converted at fourteen while away at school. She read Greek and Hebrew as well as several modern languages, and gave her energy to writing and to foreign missions. Her hymns first circulated as leaflets and decorated cards before being gathered into collections, and around a hundred are still in use, among them "Like a river glorious" and "I gave my life for thee."
