A Methodist Episcopal minister who served pastorates in New York and Connecticut, he spent the 1890s running New York City's church extension and missionary society and editing The Christian City. He later headed his denomination's Board of Foreign Missions and held leadership posts in the Federal Council of Churches. France and Greece both decorated him for his work.
