Franz Gruber

1787–1863

The son of a linen weaver, he learned violin and organ against his father's wishes. For over twenty years he taught school in Arnsdorf while also serving as parish organist at St. Nicholas Church in nearby Oberndorf. He finished his career as organist and choir director in Hallein, where he founded the town's choral society.
