Raised in Haarlem under Nazi occupation, where his parents worked with the resistance, he became a pacifist and found his way to church as a teenager. He trained for Congregational ministry in Bristol and began writing hymns in 1963 as minister of Pilgrim Church in Plymouth. His texts, first gathered in Pilgrim Praise, return often to peace and justice.
