Raised in a poor Leeds vicarage, he taught school before his Anglican ordination in 1908 and then worked in hard-pressed parishes in Rugby and Worcester. As an army chaplain in the First World War he won the Military Cross for carrying morphine to a front-line aid post under fire and tending the wounded in No Man's Land. His verse collection Rough Rhymes of a Padre made him a household name.
