George Frideric Handel

His father wanted him to study law, but he trained instead with the cathedral organist in Halle and became a fine violinist and keyboard player. After years in Italy he settled in England in 1713 and made his name with operas and oratorios, Messiah among them. He wrote only three hymn tunes. ANTIOCH is Lowell Mason's reworking of his oratorio themes for "Joy to the world."
