Author
George Herbert
1593–1633 · Montgomery Castle · Wales
Born at Montgomery Castle and educated at Westminster and Cambridge, he served as the university's Public Orator while hoping for a career at court. When those hopes faded he took orders, and in 1630 became rector of the small parish of Bemerton near Salisbury. Three weeks before his death he sent his manuscript poems, The Temple, to Nicholas Ferrar. Printed in 1633, they have fed hymnals ever since.
