George Neumark

On his way to university during the Thirty Years' War he was robbed of nearly everything he owned, and years later a fire took what he had rebuilt. Out of those trials came hymns of trust in God, above all "If you but trust in God to guide you," for which he also wrote the tune. In 1651 he settled in Weimar as court poet and librarian to Duke Johann Ernst.
