After ordination in 1821 he assisted at Trinity Church in New York and taught at Trinity College in Hartford. He was consecrated Bishop of New Jersey in 1832 and founded two schools in Burlington, St. Mary's Hall and Burlington College. His poems, first gathered in Songs by the Way in 1824, include "Softly now the light of day."
