Apprenticed to his brother as a shopkeeper, he later worked as a silk weaver and passed through five years of spiritual depression before his faith revived. He withdrew to a cottage near Mülheim and around age thirty began preaching at gatherings there and on yearly trips to Holland. He wrote 111 hymns, most for his Spiritual Flower Garden of 1731, and never founded a sect of his own.
