A Reform rabbi trained in Posen and at the universities of Berlin and Halle, he led a liberal congregation in Manchester, England, before coming to Temple Emanu-El in New York in 1873, where he later became senior rabbi. He wrote and translated hymn texts for Reform Jewish worship.
