Hans Leo Hassler

Born into a family of musicians in Nuremberg, he studied organ in Venice with Andrea Gabrieli and carried the Venetian polychoral style back to Germany. A Lutheran working for a Catholic patron in Augsburg, he wrote music that served both churches, ending his career as Kapellmeister in Dresden. He also advised organ builders and designed a clockwork organ later sold to Emperor Rudolf II.
