The daughter of a Methodist minister, Lemmel came to America from England at twelve and later spent four years studying voice in Germany. She sang on the Chautauqua circuit and taught voice at Moody Bible Institute, and a hymnal she produced was used by evangelist Billy Sunday for over a decade. She retired to Seattle, where she had once been a newspaper music critic.
