Hemy went to sea as a young man and tried emigrating to Australia in 1850, but came back to Newcastle when Melbourne offered no living. There he was organist at St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church and later taught music at St. Cuthbert's College in Durham. Along with hymn tunes he wrote dance music and once ran for local office.
