Author & Composer
Henry J. Gauntlett
1805–1876 · Wellington, Shropshire · United Kingdom
Organist at his father's church in Olney from the age of nine, Gauntlett practiced law until 1844 to please his father before giving himself wholly to music. He designed organs and patented an electric action in 1851. Mendelssohn picked him to play the organ part at the 1846 premiere of Elijah, and he is said to have written some ten thousand hymn tunes.
