Smart left the law for music and taught himself the organ well enough to hold posts at St. Luke's, Old Street, and St. Pancras in London, where his improvising and his accompaniment of congregational singing drew notice. He went completely blind at fifty-two but kept playing from memory. He also designed organs for Leeds Town Hall and edited the Scottish Presbyterian Hymnal.
