Composer
Ira David Sankey
1840–1908 · Edinburgh, Pennsylvania · United States
Raised in a Methodist home in Pennsylvania, Sankey was running a large Sunday school and singing sacred solos when D. L. Moody heard him at a YMCA convention in Indianapolis and talked him into joining his Chicago work. The pair sailed for England in 1872, and their first meeting at York drew eight people. His collection Sacred Songs and Solos sold in huge numbers and was translated into several languages.
