Small studied divinity at Edinburgh under Thomas Chalmers and went with him into the Free Church of Scotland in 1843. From 1847 he was the Free Church minister at Bervie, near Montrose. I've Found a Friend appeared in his 1866 collection Psalms and Sacred Songs and was picked up by Sankey for Sacred Songs and Solos.
