A Sunday school teacher and choir leader at a Methodist church in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Black edited a dozen gospel songbooks and wrote close to 1,500 songs. He trained under Daniel B. Towner of Moody Bible Institute and sat on the commission that produced the 1905 Methodist Hymnal.
