A Maine minister who left the pulpit to fight in the Civil War, Thompson afterward served in the Methodist Episcopal conferences of Maine and Providence until retiring in 1886. He then edited a newspaper in Keyser, West Virginia, and in his seventies took the pulpit of a Methodist church in St. Petersburg, Florida.
