Converted at 22, Gray was rector of the First Reformed Episcopal Church in Boston for fourteen years before moving to Moody Bible Institute, where he served as dean and then president for three decades. He was one of the seven editors of the Scofield Reference Bible and oversaw four editions of the Institute's hymnal, Voice of Thanksgiving.
