Son of the Princeton theologian Archibald Alexander, he alternated between teaching at Princeton and pastoring Presbyterian churches in New York, ending at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian. His hymn translations, including the one from the German in our hymnal, were gathered after his death as The Breaking Crucible.
