Composer
Jean J. Rousseau
1712–1778 · Geneva · Switzerland
The Geneva-born philosopher of the Enlightenment was also a composer. Son of a watchmaker, he lost his mother days after his birth and ran away from the city at sixteen. His writings on society and education stirred controversy across Europe, and late in life he returned to the Calvinist faith of his childhood.
