A sermon heard as a student in Bremen turned him from a careless youth toward earnest faith. He tutored merchants' sons in Frankfurt, where he came under the Pietist circle of Spener, and then ran the Latin school in Düsseldorf. Suspended for holding prayer meetings the church authorities had not approved, he turned to writing hymns, including our opening hymn "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty." He died at 30.
