A pupil of the theorist Kirnberger in Berlin, he conducted the city's French Theatre before serving as court music director in Copenhagen for the Danish king. He wrote operas and sacred music, but his simple folk-style songs traveled furthest. WIR PFLÜGEN, the harvest tune for "We Plow the Fields," is one of them. A library fire and a shipwreck broke his health in his final years.
